Arrive in St Malo by train or ferry. Explore the historic town of St Malo. St-Malo was a fortified island at the mouth of the Rance during the Middle Ages, controlling not only the estuary but the open sea beyond. Now inseparably attached to the mainland, St-Malo is a superb and lively old citadelle. A walk along the top of the old walls is a great way to see the town.
Possibility to book extra night at St Malo.
Also option of booking a boat trip down the Rance Estuary to Dinan and extra night in Dinan. Next day explore the beautiful historic walled town of Dinan &/or walk along the picturesque Rance Estuary. Night in Dinan and transfer to Dinard to start the coastal walk. Note: the boat trips down the estuary are only available on limited dates.
Take the regular and short ferry trip across the mouth of the Rance estuary to reach the attractive seaside resort of Dinard. Your walk to St Briac is a succession of wonderful headlands and coves whilst also admiring the opulent villas built in the 19th century when this area first became a fashionable sea side resort. You’ll visit the pretty resort of St Luniare with its attractive estuary and wide sandy beaches. Further headlands bring you to the picturesque port at St Briac and then its well-preserved historic centre.
Overnight: St Briac, Walk: 16km, +100m
Transfer onto the peninsula St Jacut de la Mer. Walk along the coast to reach the ruins of Chateau Guildo keeping guard over the impressive tidal estuary of Arguenon. Now follow the coast along the Arguenon Bay past the mussel farms stretching across the bay with wonderful views of St Jacut peninsula and the island of Hebihens. This partially wooded section has a lost world feel, as you undulate along a rugged coastline. You’ll then return to civilisation and pass large sandy beaches to reach the resort of St Cast le Guildo.
Overnight: St Cast le Guildo, Walk: 14km, +300m
Your day starts by walking around Point de St Cast for exceptional views before following a scenic section of coastline (easier than the previous day) with rocky headlands and small bays with great views towards the Frehel peninsula. You’ll then pass around the secluded bay at Port St Jean, wonderfully remote and cut off. After, you’ll climb to the pretty hamlet of St Germain before descending to the bay at Port à la Duc. Transfer to Pointe de la Latte on the peninsula.
Optional extra day's walking and night at Point de la Latte on the Frehel Peninsula. Your optional walk passes through heathland and pretty farmland to reach the village of Plevenon. Return to the coast and walk the wild and wooded section of the Eastern coast of the Frehel peninsula. Great views as you return to your guest house.
Overnight: Pointe de la Latte, Walk: 15-18km, +250m
Cap Fréhel is one of the finest stretches of coastline in northern France. Your walking trail is varied as it not only features wild cliffs, but also golden beaches, pine forests and the 1920’s resort of Sables d’Or les Pins. First you’ll pass Fort de la Latte sitting prominently on the end of the headland. Your trail then heads west as woodland gives way to heathland and the views back along the coast become more extensive. You’ll then reach the Cap Fréhel itself where the sandstone cliffs rise 70m in blocks from the sea and are home to numerous seabirds. There are a number of stunning viewpoints here and on the first section of coastline as you head south past the lighthouses. As you move away from the Cap so you gradually descend with accessible beaches returning at La Fosse and then les Greves. Your trail goes inland through pine forest before rejoining the coast in the unique resort of Sables d’Or les Pins, built between the Wars.
Overnight: Sables d'Or les Pins, Walk: max 17km, +70m
Your final walking day along Brittany's Emerald Coast starts going around the beautiful golden sands and pine forest at the head of the estuary. 6 nights/7 days: 5 days independent walking moving between guest houses
Everday of week subject to availability during 1 April to 31 October
Walks on this self guided holiday in Brittany are through undulating coastline alternating between easy and moderate walking, distances varying between 15 & 18km per day. On most days the amount of up and downs is no more than 300m. Some days feel harder as they constantly rise and descend, sometimes on steps, and so it is harder to find a rhythm. The paths are well maintained and for the most part well sign posted.
This walking holiday is graded moderate. You should have some experience of day walking and be in reasonable health. See more information about walking grades.
6 nights accommodation in several charming small guest houses and hotels in double or twin rooms with own bathrooms. A variety of styles with good hospitality and comfortable accommodation throughout.
Our self-guided walking holiday on the Emerald Coast is available from the beginning of April to the end of October. Brittany has a typical maritime climate with warm summers and mild winters. Average summer temperatures are around 21ºC - 27º C (70° F -80º F) with winter temperatures rarely falling below freezing especially along the coast. Rainfall occurs regularly but in-between, sunny, cloudless days are also common. In the summer months, temperatures in the region can reach 30 °C however, the climate generally remains comfortable when compared to further south in France.
April average daytime temperatures are 14°C, climbing to 20°C by the time you get to June, whilst May is the wettest of these 3 months. As well as being the warmest months, July and August are generally also the driest months and on average each have 2 day’s with some rain per week. September is similar to June with warm days at 20°C, but is slighly wetter on average. October however, is considerably more unsettled than the other months and has much reduced sunshine totals.
Most of this walking holiday follows the red and white waymarks of the GR34 long distance GR trail. The markings are regular. Smal sections will also follow local trails waymarked in yellow. There is a fairly dense network of signposts with place names and directions. The walking follows clear paths, tracks and minor roads for its entire duration. Our walking notes are very detailed (more information here) and include intermediate distances for sections of the trail. They also include information about the sites which can be explored along the route. We supply one walking guide per person on this holiday. As well as the detailed walking notes we supply official walking maps produced by IGN at a scale of 1:25,000. Your trail is highlighted on the maps.
On this walking holiday your main luggage is transferred between guest houses so you only have to carry a day rucksack with picnic lunch (supplied by the guest houses and included in the holiday price), water and spare clothes, waterproofs, camera etc. On this holiday a local taxi company is responsible for transporting your main luggage, so if you have any specific requests such as a lift to the next guest house then you can speak with the taxi driver. Please limit the weight of your bags where possible to 20kg. We only use hotels and small guest houses in historic buidlings and some of the rooms are accessible by stairs.
Make your own way to your first guest house in St Malo
Brittany Ferries run from Portsmouth to St Malo in Brittany whilst Condor Ferries run from Weymouth and Poole to St Malo. Your guest house is within walking distance of the ferry terminal. If you arrive by car, there are long stay car parks outside of the main historic centre.

Normandy and Brittany: Coastal Gems and Medieval Tales
Explore coastal landscapes where charming villages and historic sites transport you back in time, from Honfleur to Mont-Saint-Michel and Saint-Malo
In Saint-Malo, stroll along the medieval ramparts and cobbled streets of the center. The weather is particularly pleasant between May and September, but even on gray days, the color of the water is a brilliant green that will surprise you. Along the coast, you'll enjoy fine sandy beaches, notably Port Hue Beach in Saint-Briac, definitely one of the most beautiful beaches of the Emerald Coast!
Enjoyed the whole experience - we felt good at the end - a treasured memory. The variety of each day's walk & the absolutely spectacular scenery!
Judith T. & David J.
We enjoyed the sea air and views; the cliffs and estuaries; seeing the oyster beds being worked; and the excellent sea food.
