Hidden Provence: Exploring the Massif des Maures

HPH News - 22/05/26

Reporting live from La Garde-Freinet…

Today I’m sharing a beautiful 13 km circular walk, with around 540 metres of elevation gain. The route begins on the heights above the village, from a large car park where several trails set off.

For the Riaux walk, we start by descending into a magnificent chestnut forest. This region is particularly renowned for its chestnuts, especially in November during the Chestnut Festival, when the whole village comes together to roast and enjoy them, street-food style, in the village centre.

At first, the path is wide and easy to follow, gently winding along the hillside and crossing the Riaux stream several times. As you reach the valley floor, the trail continues alongside the river on a narrower, slightly hidden path, and the scenery begins to shift.

Leaving the chestnut forest behind, you’ll find yourself on a sandy trail running beside the water. There’s a peaceful, flat section here, where sunlight filters softly through the trees – the perfect place to pause for a moment and soak in the surrounding nature and delicate scents.

The walk then continues on the opposite bank, climbing steadily back into the hills along a narrower, rockier single-track path. Along the way, you’ll pass close to a small beehive site built into the hillside, accessible only on foot, adding a unique touch to the experience.

After one final crossing of the Riaux stream, it’s time to begin the ascent back towards the village.

And the best part? A well-earned detour through the village for a refreshing drink on a sunny terrace – the perfect way to round off the day.

If you’re looking to discover the French Riviera away from the crowds, I would highly recommend escaping into the hills to explore the Massif des Maures. It’s a truly stunning natural area that will take your breath away.

And for those hoping to enjoy the region’s most beautiful beaches, here’s a little tip: set off early, explore lesser-known spots – perhaps by canoe or kayak – or simply plan your visit outside the peak tourist season.

My favourite time of year remains May and June, when the landscape is at its most vibrant and the sea still feels wonderfully fresh.
