As well as the estuaries, there are high cliff top views, picturesque fishing villages and sandy beaches aplenty to enjoy on route between the historic maritime centres of Falmouth and Plymouth. Although there's plenty to see along the route, this is one of the more quieter sections of the South West Coast Path as well as being one of the more gentle. It begins in the Victorian seaside town of Weston Super Mare in the west and ends in the vibrant and historic town of Frome in the east. There is time to explore Cheddar with its magnificent gorge as well as the beautiful medieval city of Wells with its cathedral and moated Bishop's Palace. The limestone Mendips have a network of caves as well as gorges, with Cheddar Caves and Wookey Hole Caves open to the public. On its steeper slopes flower rich grasslands and wooded coombes offer varied habitats for a wide variety of wildlife with great views across the Somerset Levels. |
