UbayeThe Ubaye Valley is an area in the Alpes de Haute-Provence department, in the French Alps, with its capital being Barcelonnette in the lower valley. The Ubaye River gives its name to the valley. The upper Ubaye lies on the France Italian border. Ubaye Valley's highest mountain is the Aiguille de Chambeyron 3,412m. The Ubaye is a beautiful and little known region with many lakes and magnificent mountains. Although it is not designated a regional or national park, the Ubaye is as beautiful as the surrounding areas such as the Queyras. We have two self-guided walking holidays in the Ubaye which explore different parts of the region, both of which also explore adjacent mountainous areas. Discover our Grand Tour of the Ubaye, a circular walking trail in large part following the GR56 trail - the GR Tour of the Ubaye, taking you through wild and picturesque mountain scenery. During your trek you’ll visit the Upper Verdon Valley (where you may well see Cayolle Ibex), the Mercantour National Park and the famous Allos Lake, as well as the Nature Reserve of Lauzanier. Despite the high altitude, parts of the walk have a distinctly southern feel. You can decide whether you wish to carry your own gear or have your bags transported for you. Our 6-day walking tour of the Ubaye is a circular walking trail through a hidden and unspoilt corner of the French Alps with a small excursion into Italy. Starting in Ceillac in the Queyras, this off the beaten track itinerary will take you through some magnificent landscapes with beautiful alpine summits, serene mountain lakes and remote and traditional alpine hamlets including Maljessat in France and Chiaperra in Italy. Our trek in the Ubaye takes you up close to the dramatic rocky summits of Font Sancte and Chambeyron over 3400m high. Just like the grand tour you can decide whether you wish to carry your own gear or have your bags transported for you. Equally on this alpine walking holiday there is the possibility to choose rooms for 2 on 4 of the nights (if available). |
