Quieter side of Dordogne: Villages of Correze

On the edge of the Massif Central in France lies a beautiful undulating countryside of green pasture, forest and vines where pretty villages adorn the ridges and hilltops. The Correze is not as well known as the more frequented parts of Dordogne, but the villages have a varied character and charm, set in a countryside which changes with the geology, as limestone gives way to sandstone and then granite. Your self guided walking holiday starts near the local centre of Brive-la-Gaillarde and heads south east towards Beaulieu sur Dordogne, on the Dordogne River passing through the historic villages of Turenne, Collonges-la-Rouge and Curement all of which are classed as some of the prettiest villages in France.

This 4-day, 5 night walking holiday finishes by the Dordogne river and criss-crosses through a narrow band of beautiful green scenery with a patchwork of fields interspersed with vines and woodland, bordered by a limestone plateau to the west and the rolling hills of the Massif Central to the East. In between the pretty villages there are numerous historic hamlets to add to the interest.

Walking Profile

4 days self-guided walking. The walking is mixed with several moderate ascents up and down valleys and hills. On the first two days it is possible to greatly vary the amount of walking which means that the holiday can be made into an easy or moderate walk. Most days average 4-6 hrs walking. Paths are generally good, although occasionally stony with the odd steep section.

Walks day by day

Day 1: Arrival

Transfer from Brive-la-Gaillard and welcome at your lovely hotel in the heart of Correze.

Day 2: Noailhac - Turenne

Gentle walk to start your holiday through rolling hills to the beautiful village of Turenne with its castle perched on an isolated hill. Explore its narrow alleyways which spill down the hillside before setting out for a walk around the surrounding hills for great views of the village from all side. 10km - 18km +200m or 450m

Day 3: Turenne - Collonges-les-Rouges

Cross the Tourmente Valley and head back north on the GR480 through the pretty hamlet of Ligneyrac clinging to the valley side. Continue to climb the valley to reach the wonderful village of Collonges-la-Rouge built from a vibrant red sandstone. Explore its well preserved streets and alleyways. Just like Turenne and Curemont which you'll visit tomorrow, Collonges-les-Rouges is classed as one of the prettiest villages in France. Opportunity to walk into the higher hills to the north of the village. 10 - 19km +160m or 430m

Day 4: Collonges-les-Rouges - Curemont

You’ll follow the GR480 for much of the day passing through pretty hamlets such as Saillac as you meander through an expansive and undulating countryside with vines and pasture. Your day finishes in the ridgetop village of Curemont, the third village in as many days classed as one of the prettiest in France. 17km +250m

Day 5: Curemont - Beaulieu sur Dordogne

A shorter but hillier day across wooded hills to reach the pretty, historic abbey town of Beaulieu sur Dordogne on the banks of the Dordogne River. 13km, +450m.

Day 6: Departure

After breakfast transfer to Brive-la-Gaillard train station.
