Locality & Walks
This self-guided walking holiday explores a beautiful part of the central Pyrenees mountains in France. Your walk takes you up onto the sides of the delightful and luminous Azun Valley where you’ll marvel at the wonderful panoramas and the well preserved mountain villages. Four of the days have both moderate and more challenging options to suit different abilities and as the week progresses you’ll enter the stunning high mountains of the Pyrenees National Park peppered with beautiful lakes. Rich green forests, mountain pastures, beautiful lakes and shining snow on the flanks of the mighty Balaitous mountain all vie for attention, creating a rich palette of colours.
Walking Profile6 days independent walking moving between guest houses with day walks from 3 places. Transfers to access walks/hotels on 2 days. Graded as moderate to challenging and the difficulty on any one day will depend on your choices. The moderate walks average distances of 12km with 500m of ascent (maximum 750m). The more challenging walks are longer and have an average of 900m ascent in the day. Paths are generally good and well defined, although they can be rocky & mountainous in character in places. This holiday is accessible to the average hill walker, as well as those looking for more of a challenge

Walking Holiday Day-by-dayDay 1: ArrivalWelcome at Argelès-Gazost station or Arras. Night in hotel with swimming pool at Arras, village built at the base of its chateau. Day 2: Tour from ArrasWalking tour from Arras passing by the Mont de Gez and the beautiful Bergons forest with chestnut and hazelnut trees. Great panoramic views of the glaciated Valley des Gaves. 4 hrs 30, 10km +500m Day 3: Arras - AucunClimb the Azun Valley by a wonderful balcony trail with great views over the vast pastures and nearby mountain peak of Cabaliros. Your walking trail passes by the Col of Arras and a lovely beech & fir forest. The landscape is peppered with hamlets, mills and barns among the hay fields. Mod: 3hrs 30, +400m, –230m, 9km; Chall: 5hrs, +700m, -530m, 11km. Day 4: Tour from AucunToday’s walking trail explores the upper reaches of the Bergons Valley with the opportunity to climb the peak du Bergons, which at 2068m has beautiful panoramic views. You’ll then pass over several cols surrounded by goats, often under the watchful eye of a vulture or eagle. Mod: 5hrs 45, +750m, 14km; Chall: 7hrs, +1050m, 15km. Day 5: Aucun - EstaingToday your walk changes valley and ambiance as you follow the mythical GR10 long distance walking path to approach the high Pyrenees mountains and its National Park. Transfer back to hotel in Aucun. Mod: 4hrs 30, +500m, -200m, 11km; Chall: 5hrs 30, +800m, -500m 12km. Day 6: Tour from EstaingToday the scene has changed as you take a detour into the heart of the Pyrenees National Park and its stunning mountain scenery. After a short transfer your trail explores a number of high mountain lakes, relics of old glaciations, where you can look out for marmots and Isards (Pyrenees Chamois). Transfer back to Aucun. Mod: 5hrs, +500m, 15km; Chall: 7hrs 15, +1100m, 18.5km. Day 7: Estaing - ArrasA pleasant return via the Estaing Valley crossing hazelnut forests and clearings with great views of villages perched on the valley sides. Tour ends on your return to Arras where it’s possible to book an extra night. 4hrs, +250m, -750m, 12km.

Accommodation & Meals
6 nights half board in friendly, family run, hotels. 2 nights at Auberge de l'Arragnat in Arras and 4 nights at 3-star Hotel Picors in Aucun both with swimming pools. Breakfast and evening meals at your hotel. Picnic is not included in the price, but can be ordered from your hosts the evening before.

Travel Options
Make your own way to hotel in Arras or we can provide you with a transfer from the train station in Argeles Gazost.
Train: Changes between the Eurostar and TGV are at Lille or Paris. TGV's run from Paris to Toulouse. Regional train from Toulouse to Lourdes. Change & take train direction Cauterets, getting off at Argeles Gazost.
Flights: There are flights from French and UK airports to Tarbes-Lourdes airport: Ryan Air on Tuesdays & Saturday from London Stansted or Air France via Paris Orly. Taxi transfers from Lourdes can be arranged on your behalf, although they are usually present when flights arrive.
