Mountain Walking Holidays
Discover our range of walking and trekking holidays in the mountains of Europe
France is blessed with a number of wonderful mountain ranges, culminating in the highest point in western Europe in the French Alps. Our range of guided and independent walking holidays explore the three main mountain ranges of France: the Alps, Pyrenees and Massif Central. We also have self-guided holidays in the Italian Alps including a trekking tour around Mont Viso and walking trips in the Dolomites.
The French Alps form a broad arc on the south east border of France and consist of over 30 separate mountain ranges. The different characteristics of these Alpine mountain ranges, such as their height, geology, climate and farming, give rise to unique and varied mountain walking experiences. For example, the trekking tour of the Vanoise is a high mountain experience touring the largest glacial plateau in the western Alps, whilst the lack of glaciers in the Queyras enables you to follow alpine walking trails reaching over 3000m in altitude with beautiful Alpine panoramas. The remote location of the Queyras mountains, mean that they are an off the beaten track and well preserved destination for an Alpine walking holiday. Our self guided walking trail in the Ecrins takes you on a spectacular traverse with panoramic views of the high jagged peaks of the Ecrins. The Vercors region in the west of the Alps is a limestone mountain range of great contrasts with amazing rock faces and desolate plateaux. Further south the Mediterranean climate influences the alpine mountains with the slopes of the Baronnies in Provence covered in lavender, whilst the Mercantour Mountains harbour wonderful perched villages and historic rock engravings.
Further south the Pyrenees mountains run along the border between France and Spain. We have mountain walking holidays in both the Western and Eastern Pyrenees. In the East lies the sunny, high plateau of the Cerdagne where our independent walking holiday explores an array of beautiful mountain lakes, surrounded by imposing mountains. In the Western Pyrenees our self-guided walking tour explores the delightful and luminous Azun Valley where you’ll marvel at the wonderful panoramas and the well preserved mountain villages.
Our mountain walking holidays also explore various upland regions of the Massif Central in central southern France. This French mountainous area the size of Scotland includes such regions as Auvergne, Beaujolais and Tarn. However, please note that here we have only listed those walking holidays which explore mountainous or hilly areas and which are at the upper end of moderate walking grade or more difficult. Such walking holidays include the Tour of the Puy de Sancy, the highest mountain peak in France outside of the Alps and Pyrenees, as well as a centre based week's walking holiday in the rugged Cantal mountains.
