Morocco: Toubkal High Atlas Adventure

Trekking in Morocco offers a rich and colourful experience, where spectacular scenery and great walks are mixed with friendly locals and ancient cultures. The Atlas mountain range in North Africa runs for 1,000 miles forming a spectacular barrier between the sea and the Sahara. The mountains are not continuous but rather form a series of ranges, interspersed with plateaus, basins and gorges. The most prominent is the High Atlas, which contains the highest peak in North Africa, Toubkal. Its stunning summit rises 4,167 metres providing some exciting and challenging walking, as well as fantastic views.

The High Atlas has a scattering of traditional Berber villages decorating the hillside. The life of the Berber people in this area has changed little over the centuries. Shepherds still lead their flocks on the mountainside, women still gather at the village wells and mule trails still carry walnuts to the weekly souks. The Berbers are a friendly, independent people who are proud of their origins. Known for their hospitality, you should enjoy the company of your guide, cook and muleteers.

Trekking profile

Overall this High Atlas guided trekking holiday is graded challenging due to the length of some of the days coupled with the altitude. Daily walks range from 4 to 9 hours walking and represent moderate to very challenging outings. Average days include 7 hours trekking and 1000m of altitude gain. Maximum altitude gain on any one day is 1500m. The paths are sometimes rough underfoot; with gravel paths and  scree slopes. The ascent of Toubkal is fairly steep; but not difficult and well within the capability of fit mountain walkers. Toubkal is at an altitude of 4167m and altitude  problems may effect some people on the mountain, although our carefully managed trek itinerary enables most people to acclimatize very well for the final ascent.

Day 1: Arrival

Welcome, pick-up from Marrakech airport and drive to hotel in the city

Day 2: Tacchedirt

We depart early in the morning by minibus to Oukaimden, where we meet up with our team of muleteers (2500m altitude). We then trek to Tacchedirt ,over the pass Tizi nou Addi (2960m) with great views of the valley below. The path then decsnds to camp at the village (2314m). 4.30 hours of trek

Day 3: Tizi n'lkemt

On our second day's trekking we start with one of our longest ascents of the holiday, climbing to the col Tizi n'lkemt (3550m), which provides amazing views to the North. From the barren col we descend back towards civilisation, passing shepherds with their flocks of sheep and goats. We have lunch at 2450m by the river in a oasis of green. After lunch the trek meanders following narrow valleys and red rock gorges to our camp at the foot of Tizi t'Ourai (2900m) in a secluded valley. 8 hours of trek

Days 4: Lake d'Ifni (2263m)

A small ascent brings us to a col with great views to the south of the ancient hills and plains that border the Saharan desert. After a very pretty and pleasant descent, our trek passes through the traditional berber villages of Amsouzort and Imhilene clinging onto the mountainside with their unique architecture, where we can stop for traditional mint tea. After lunch in a valley covered in walnut groves, we climb up to the spectacular Lac d'Ifni, a beautiful, emerald green lake where, the brave, have the chance to swim in the only major lake in the High Atlas. You’ll camp in this stunning setting beside the lake at 2263m, underneath the southern flanks of Toubkal. 6-7 hours trek

Day 5: Nelter (3200m)

We depart early again, to climb to Tizi n'Ouannoms (3600m). The route follows a stunning gorge shaped by ancient glaciers and climbs to an amazingly positioned notch in the ridgeline on the flanks of the Toubkal mountain. We’ll descend to the Nelter refuge at 3200m where we’ll camp. The trek will finish early allowing time to relax, rest and acclimatize before the summit day. 5-6 hours trek

Day 6: Toubkal (4167m)

We ascend Toubkal (4167m) by the south col and north east ridge taking in great views of the Anti Atlas on the way.  The summit provides stunning views of the whole mountain range. Descending by the same route, back to camp, where we'll have lunch, the route then descends past the village of Sidi Chamharouch with its shrine. (2300m). 9 hours trek
