Dordogne

The Dordogne region of France is dominated by the magnificent Dordogne river and its stunning valley lined with historic delights. Our self guided walking and cycling holidays pass through one picturesque village after another with pretty streets lined with historic buildings including market halls, chateaux, churches, town walls, dovecotes and abbeys. La Roque Gageac has been built into steep sandstone cliffs which rise high above the river with fascinating architecture and a troglodyte fort built into the cliff face. The beautiful town of Sarlat is famous for its medieval buildings and its lively street market. Sarlat has remained preserved from modern development and is considered to be one of the towns most representative of 14th century France.

Our self-guided cycling tour starts and finishes at Gourdon, which is a beautiful village built in tiers around a hill, before progressing to Rocamadour, another wonderful village clinging to the cliffs overlooking the Ouysse gorge. Both our cycling and walking holidays pass through Beynac, its pretty houses lining the river, sat underneath the amazing chateau on the cliff top. In addition, the Dordogne has an impressive concentration of chateaux lining the valley such as Fenelon, Beynac, Castlenaud and Marqueyssac.

The Dordogne also has important pre-historic sites with cave drawings to discover on your independent French walking and cycling holidays. Both holidays explore the pretty Dordogne countryside steeped in history, with pretty valleys, dramatic gorges and deserted plateaux.

Further east and north lies a beautiful undulating countryside of green pasture, forest and vines where pretty villages adorn the ridges and hilltops. The Correze is not as well known as the more frequented parts of Dordogne, but the villages have a varied character and charm, set in a countryside which changes with the geology, as limestone gives way to sandstone and then granite. Your self guided walking holiday starts near the local centre of Brive-la-Gaillarde and heads south east towards Beaulieu sur Dordogne, on the Dordogne River passing through the historic villages of Turenne, Collonges-la-Rouge and Curement all of which are classed as some of the prettiest villages in France. You have the option of a 4-day, 5 night walking holiday finishing by the Dordogne river or a 6-day, 7 night trail which after 3 days back north to finish in the historic village of Aubazine.
