The arrival of the world famous Beaujolais Nouveau is celebrated every year on the third Thursday of November. Why not enjoy a weekend city break to Lyon that embraces this special event. A day break in the Beaujolais starts with a visit to a number of picture-postcard villages, before taking a stroll through the streets of Villefranche-sur-Saône, the capital of the Beaujolais. Local wine growers, as well as other local producers line the High Street providing plenty of opportunities to sample the local specialities.

Festival of Lights

Lyon plays host to the world famous international light festival, Fete des Lumieres. Inspired by a religious celebration which started in 1852, the city is awash with lights for 4 days in early December. Buildings and monuments are illuminated and exhibitions of all shapes and sizes decorate the town with colour. The whole show is free and attracts visitors from the four corners of the globe.

The Festival of Lights in Lyon expresses gratitude to Mary, mother of Jesus on December 8th each year. Every house places candles along the outsides of all their windows to produce a unique effect throughout Lyon's streets. The festival includes activities based on light and projection with the peak of activity occurring on the 8th. The two main focal points of activity are usually the Basilica of Fourviere and the Place des Terreaux, which hosts a different light show each year.

Lyon is also a great shopping location, so why not combine a city break with some festive shopping.
