Ardeche - Walks on the wild side
The Ardeche is an amazingly diverse region making up the eastern extremity of the Massif Central, with wild, rugged landscapes and picturesque stone villages clinging to terraced hillsides. Influenced by different climatic regimes, the Ardeche includes lush high plateaux and sun parched, olive covered slopes. Far from the beaten track, the plateau is punctuated by volcanic domes, known as Sucs, of which, Mont Mézenc at 1754m, is the highest. A number of gorges and deep valleys have cut through its Eastern slopes creating secluded and wild areas with tumbling streams and dramatic waterfalls

Walks:The walks vary in difficulty due to their length and/or altitude gain. In general the paths are good and the terrain rugged, but not overly complicated or mountainous. The holiday is included in the grade Moderate/challenging due to the length of some of the proposed walks. Day 1: Arrival,Collection from airport and drive to Ardeche Day 2: Gorges de EyrieuxThis walk is a gentle introduction to the Ardeche valleys. Here in this stunning gorge, rocky outcrops, terraces and steep forested slopes plunge to the river Eyrieux which cuts an erratic path through the ever-changing picturesque landscape. Day 3: Mont Mézenc

Please Note: Further information about the walks in Ardeche will be sent to you prior to your holiday. We will endeavour to keep to these walks as far as possible; however they are subject to change. In addition, we like to maintain a certain degree of flexibility to take account of the group’s abilities and interests, and the local conditions. No formal rest days have been planned during this holiday, however, it has been organised so that shorter walks and visits can be organised for one day if the group so decides. The final selection of walks will be made by your guide during the week after consultation with the group.
Accommodation & Meals
We will be using at least three traditional Ardeche guest houses during the course of your holiday. They are exquisite properties offering authentic and very comfortable accommodation. Our two day walk will involve a night at the Auberge du Bez, where the standard is more basic. The exact guest houses used will depend on availability. Below is a representative selection of the ones we use.
At midday we will eat packed lunches prepared by our hosts, often with fresh produce from the farms, and they will be eaten during the course of the walk. All evening meals will be taken at your guest houses. Local specialities will be offered most evenings which are often flavoured by the great variety of wild herbs and plants that grow locally in the Ardeche valleys.
